There are two meetings taking place this afternoon with jumps action from Carlisle and Southwell. Tom Scudamore travels all the way to Carlisle to ride Gevrey Chambertin and Miss Tynte for David. Gevrey Chambertin (pictured above) goes in the 3m1f handicap hurdle at 2.10pm and has to shoulder 11-11 - Carlisle is a very stiff track so this will take some getting. Fortunately Gevrey is a strong stayer as well as a course winner - he is going nicely at home although he is not always the easiest horse to predict. Miss Tynte contests the mares' bumper at 3.15pm - she finished runner-up on her sole start to date in Ireland and makes her debut for the stable this afternoon.

This afternoon there are five meetings taking place with jumps action from Cheltenham, Doncaster and Lingfield while there are a couple of all-weather flat fixtures from Newcastle and Wolverhampton. David has a couple of runners at Lingfield today; Alternatif and Bella and Tom Scudamore will ride the pair. Alternatif (pictured above) contests the 2m7 1/2f handicap chase and he is the favourite according to the Post, although at 5/1 the field, it is clearly an open affair. He has dropped to a reasonable mark and on the pick of his form he would have a decent chance. Bella ran a cracker when just touched off at Towcester last time but is 4lbs higher this afternoon for getting beaten. She is a 5/1 shot and should run her usual honest race. Conditional jockeys David Noonan and Michael Heard have also picked up some outside rides at the meeting.

3.00pm Bangor***
There are four meetings taking place this afternoon with three jumps cards from Cheltenham, Doncaster and Bangor while there is an all-weather flat fixture from Newcastle. It looks as though Tom Scudamore is going to have a busy day - he rides in the first at Bangor before flying to Cheltenham to ride. Tom rides Starchitect (pictured above) for David at Bangor on his first start over fences - he was a 150 rated hurdler and was one of the best handicappers around last season. He was the best of these over timber, has schooled well at home and is expected to go very well.

It is good to see David banging in the winners and he was on the mark with an across the card double at Hexham and Leicester yesterday. Great Tempo proved one of the easiest winners of the season thus far when winning the juvenile maiden hurdle at Hexham - mind you, he was a 1/25 chance! He was backed from 1/14 - who bets on horses at those sort of prices? My mate in the bookies told me that it was better than the interest rates from the bank and I suppose he has a point. Great Tempo already has a handicap mark of 128 based on his decent French form and he can clearly go on to much better things. I had to laugh when I read Tom's post race comments, "We fancied him!"...I think it was tongue in cheek.

Champers On Ice (pictured above) made a very satisfactory debut over fences yesterday when coming home the very easy winner of Uttoxeter's three mile novices' chase. You couldn't see an awful lot because of the fog, but he jumped proficiently (if a little left at times) under Tom Scudamore and came home 27 lengths clear of his nearest rival and he can clearly go on to much better things. He rates a very exciting prospect. Meanwhile, Mister Drifter shaped with promise in the bumper and I think he will improve a great deal for the experience.

Uttoxeter 2.00pm***
There are three meetings taking place this afternoon with Uttoxeter passing their early morning inspection, they are joined by Fontwell and Southwell. David runs Champers On Ice, Mango Cap and Mister Drifter today. Champers On Ice (pictured above) developed into one of the top staying novice hurdlers last season and he makes his eagerly awaited chasing debut this afternoon. He has scared away most of the opposition (there are only two that line up against him) and he is a 2/5 shot - with a clear round he ought to win and he has schooled very well at home. Let's hope he produces a good display.

What an amazing weekend for the stable with Vieux Lion Rouge landing the valuable Becher Chase over the Grand National fences at Aintree in a thrilling finish. Tom Scu rode an absolute blinder to grab the rail after the elbow and force our geldings head in front in the dying strides. He jumped the National fences like an old hand, just as he had in the big one in April and I would imagine that he has booked his return ticket here.
