David Outside Our Cheltenham Marquee
Kauto Star got a tremendous reception when he came back into the unsaddling enclosure after pulling up in the Gold Cup. I have never seen so many people waiting to greet a horse that has not finished a race. It just shows you what a superstar he is and how many fans he has got. Ruby Walsh did the right thing in pulling him up and I think great sportsmen always know when it is time to call it a day. The problem is that horses cannot talk so it is up to connections to make the right decision for the best chaser many of us have ever seen. I don't think its a decison they should rush and I am sure they will make the right one. He has been fantatsic for our sport and for raising horse racings profile we owe him a lot.
Winning Gold Cup jockey AP would have done a few quid on Saturday. The winning jockey always buys all the champagne for all the other jockeys and I can tell you the noise coming from the wieghing room after racing tells me they were enjoying quite a few bottles! AP does not drink but he does like to keep an eye on the money. Someone told me he has still got the first white £5 he ever earnt!
The had a record crowd of 70,458 people on Gold Cup Day and most of them seemed to be in our marquee! Our marquee was once again a great success and full to capacity everyday.
