Jack Pipe watching the Ballydoyle String
There is no jumps racing today but there is plenty on the flat to keep us entertained as well as plenty of other sporting action as well! It is of course St Leger Day at Doncaster while they also race on the flat at Chester, Lingfield, Musselburgh and Bath. In Ireland, the flat action is at Leopardstown.
There are just seven runners in the St Leger which is due off at 3.40pm and Aidan O’Brien has a strong team with three runners which includes both the first and second favourite. Double Derby winner, Lambourn is only second favourite behind stablemate Scandinavia and they stand out on their best form from the rest. Sean Levey combined with the Ballydoyle team last year to win this race, he is on Lambourn and he is my pick for the race on his first try at this trip. He does have to bounce back from a disappointing run last time at York and Scandinavia did look good in winning at Goodwood last time so it should be a great race.
In Ireland, it is the first day of Irish Champions weekend at Leopardstown and it is a high-class card of nine races. Delacroix is favourite for the Irish Champions stakes at 5.30pm and Christophe Soumillion rides. Owen Burrows sends Anmaat over and he is second in the betting and is likely to give the favourite something to think about.
In yesterday’s action, I did again mention one winner and Sweet William was the easy winner of the Doncaster Cup, making it back to back successes in the race.
It is Vitality Blast Finals Day at Edgbaston today providing the weather does not get in the way! Somerset are in the first semi-final at 11am against Lancashire Lightning. The Northamptonshire Steel Backs play the Hampshire Hawks in the second semi-final with the winners progressing to the final which starts at 6.45pm. Come on Somerset!
Premier League football action returns today with eight matches with the early kick off being Arsenal against Nottingham Forrest at 12.30pm. West Ham play Spurs at 5.30pm while Brentford are at home to Chelsea at 8pm.
The Women’s rugby World Cup has reached the quarter final stages and today New Zealand play South Africa at 1pm and Canada play Australia at 4pm.
Rory McIlroy is a little off the pace in the BMW Championship golf at Wentworth with Viktor Hideki Matsuyama leading the way at -12 at the half way stage. Justin Rose is the leading British player on -11 in the chasing pack.
What has a neck but no head?
Yesterday’s answer – a sponge!
Have a great Saturday.
