Today we have the one runner at Wincanton, Ya Know Yaseff. She runs in the opening race on the card, a three mile handicap chase for conditional jockeys at 12.20pm and Gearoid Harney rides. She is a two-time winner over fences already this season and hopefully she can add a third victory this afternoon. We ran her over 2m4f last time at Lingfield, a trip shorter than ideal, to get her qualified for the mares chase final at Hereford. That race took place at the weekend but unfortunately we were just a little too far out of the weights to be able to run so she comes here instead and will prefer the return to three miles. There are 11 runners and we are 5/1 second best in the betting.
There are three jumps meetings today and alongside Wincanton they also race at Catterick and Fakenham. Jack Tudor is in action at Fakenham. There is an all-weather meeting at Wolverhampton this evening while it is another blank day of action in Ireland.
The BBC Sports Personality of the Year takes place this evening and Frankie Dettori has been short listed but he is about 40/1 in the betting. The Women’s England football goalkeeper is the short priced favourite with cricketer Stuart Broad second best in the betting at 8/1. Other candidates are Katarin Johnson-Thompson, Alfie Hewett and Rory McIlroy. It is great for racing that someone is once again nominated after AP McCoy won it in 2010 and Hollie Doyle was short listed last year. Frankie did finish third in 1996 but hopefully he may win it tonight!
Last night in the show jumping at the London International horse show a group of jockeys got involved and made two teams captained by AP and Ryan Moore and competed against each other, all for a good cause the IJF who do fantastic work supporting jockeys past or present in everyway possible and helping them get back from injuries. It was a great watch and they brought in some good entertainment for the evening especially when Sir AP fell off!
There are three quarter final matches in the EFL Cup this evening. Everton are at home to Fulham at 7.45pm, Port Vale are at home to Middlesborough, also kicking off at 7.45pm while the 8pm kick off is Chelsea at home to Newcastle.
