It is a quieter day for the stable today with just the one runner, Rebel Angel at Cheltenham. She runs in the opening race on the card at 12.05pm, the listed juvenile hurdle at Jack Tudor rides. Unfortunately for us, this race it quite a bit tougher than the one she was due to run in at Warwick on Thursday that was abandoned. Our filly is a six time flat winner and ran okay on stable debut at Wolverhampton last month. She has schooled well at home and has a lovely attitude but this looks quite a hot contest. We are about 20/1 in the betting but we have to start somewhere and I am sure she will run with credit and get some good experience under her belt.
Cheltenham is the feature jumps meeting of the day but there are also some very good cards at Doncaster and Hereford. There are two flat cards on the all-weather at Newcastle and Wolverhampton and in Ireland they are jumping at Fairyhouse. The big race at Cheltenham is the December Gold Cup at 1.50pm, a handicap chase over 2m4f. We won the race in 2019 with Warthog ridden by David Noonan and Thunder Rock for the Olly Murphy stable heads the betting this afternoon.
Yesterday at Doncaster Bonheur De Ballon travelled strongly and jumped well before weakening quite quickly once again but has returned fine this morning. Ben Lilly ran a nice race but was only actually fifth in the end, he jumped the last just in second but there wasn’t much between the first five home at the line and we just missed out. Things probably panned out as expected at Cheltenham but Paricolor showed up well for a long way and there will be easier opportunities for our seven year old. The biggest disappointment of the day was First Lord Du Cuet at Bangor who pulled up. I thought he would run well but the writing was on the wall a long way from home. He is normally a strong traveller but he did not look happy with a circuit to go. He has returned home fine which is the main thing and maybe the ground was just too holding for him. We will see how he is in the coming days but we know he is better than this and I am sure he can bounce back next time.
Oceanline ran at Southwell on the A/W last night he was prominent for a long way, but didn't get involved in the finish and ended up finishing 6th. Hopefully the handicapper will help him a bit and he can be more competitive next time.
