Watching the football, I didn't think that Bolton played that badly on Saturday, yet were still thrashed 5-0 by Manchester United.  Rooney (with his new syrup of figs) was outstanding and scored an amazing hat-trick...if it makes you perform like that everyone should get a new syrup!  I can just see United fan Tony Lomas jumping up and down with his rattle every five minutes - I bet the people in the next seats are getting fed up with him!  It looks like only Manchester City can give them a game this season.

I am not a rugby man but my mates said England will have to improve to win the Rugby World Cup.  Our star kicker Johnny Wilkinson kept missing penalties - maybe he should clasp his hands together a bit tighter (or maybe he should get himself a new barnet a la Rooney!).  I am told that Wales played well (despite losing) and were denied only by a penalty kick being disallowed despite the video replay showing that the kick was in fact good.

On the tennis front, British tennis player Oliver Golding won the boy's version of the US Open.  That is an excellent result - Andy Murray won the same title seven years ago and Oliver will be hoping to follow in his footsteps, so remember his name.

The formula one world championship is just about over despite there being another six races of the season left.  Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel, the baby-face assassin once again put his rivals to the sword by scoring an impressive success at Monza yesterday afternoon.  He is already 112 points ahead of his nearest rival with a maximum of only 150 points available in the remaining races and is well on course for his second title.  I am not a fan of F1, but you have to take your hats off to the lad - he is clearly an exceptional talent, and the bad news for his rivals (and fans of competitive racing)...he is still only 24 years old!

Back to matters relating to racing, what a good weekend it was for Newmarket trainer John Gosden - he landed the St Leger for the second consecutive year (and fourth time in all) when Masked Marvel won the Doncaster Classic.  It was an excellent performance with the race being run at course record pace and he looks a ready made Ascot Gold Cup contender for next year - let's hope that he is kept in training.  Gosden went on to complete a notable double when Duncan dead-heated for the Irish version later in the afternoon.

My wife was very upset earlier in the week when she saw a picture of a dead lion that had been shot by some rich guy with no brains.  What satisfaction can possibly be gained from shooting a big cat with a high powered rifle complete with telescopic sights?  I would like to put the brave man in a big cage with a hungry lion and arm him with a catapult...those would be fairer odds!
