I see that Kieren Fallon has announced himself a contender for this season's flat jockey's championship.  Just a few days after Ryan Moore was ruled out of contention with a broken thumb, the former six times champion jockey who is currently fifteen winners behind leader Silvestre de Sousa said that he would be going all out for a seventh title.  He says that he has been lazy until now, but will be travelling the length and breadth of the country in search of winners.  Personally, I have always been a big fan of Kieren Fallon and I think that he still has plenty to offer - if he does decide to get stuck in, his current odds of 6/1 could begin to look generous.  The real surprise package has of course been Silvestre de Sousa, who seems to have come out of nowhere to lead the championship this season.

While we are talking jockeys, it was good to see that Carlisle were well-rewarded for their efforts on Monday night when they played host to the first all lady jockey's meeting.  I am always keen on these courses trying new initiatives to bring punters through the turnstiles, although I am not sure that having single sex meetings is necessarily the way to go.  It is not the first time that Carlisle has been privvy to large crowds this year...only in May they had Lady Gaga performing on stage, although why 20,000 would pay to see this peculiar woman climb out of a prosthetic PVC stomach inside a coffin I will never know - it sounds like something more akin to a horror movie than a concert!

I see that it is Derby winning jockey Mickael Barzalona's birthday today.  Andre Fabre's young rider is 20 today - is it just me, or do top-flight sportsmen seem to be getting younger and younger?  In golf you have Rory McIlroy, while in Formula One Sebastian Vettel is on the verge of becoming a double world champion (he has only just celebrated his 24th birthday) and some of the lads that play snooker only just seem to be able to see over the table!  Anyway, happy birthday to Mickael - I am sure that we will hearing about him for many years to come.
