The stable managed to get off the mark for the new season in the best possible style yesterday when Leoncavallo (pictured above) justified favouritism in the novices' chase at Stratford.  Given a positive ride from Tom Scudamore, he was sent on five from home and scooted away in the home straight to post an impressive 13 length success.  The time was good too, with him narrowly missing the track record despite being heavily eased for much of the run-in.  Whilst he has form on softer ground, the prevailing surface at Stratford certainly seemed to suit him.  His jumping was good on the whole and he looks sure to be winning again over the larger obstacles before long.

There are three meetings taking place this afternoon with flat fixtures from Bath, Catterick and Yarmouth.  With no jumping, unsurprisingly there are no runners from the Pond House team.  Tomorrow is promising to be busier however, with no fewer than five horses declared to run at Uttoxeter tomorrow.  Let's hope we can resume winning ways then!

There was controversy at Perth yesterday afternoon when jockey Nathan Moscrop was banned for 10 days for failing to pull up his mount I'm Too Generous, who appeared to go lame after the last fence.  Whilst the welfare of the horse must always come first, in an unusual turn of events, Moscrop was aboard the only runner left in the race at that point.  I am sure he was at a bit of a loss what to do...he could pull up (which he should have done) and face the wrath of the punters who would no doubt be questioning the integrity of the sport, or carry on and face the wrath of the stewards.  Rock and a hard place anyone?!

Manchester City were impressive in dismissing managerless Watford 4-0 away from home last night, but in a bit of a surprise (to me anyway!) Aston Villa beat Arsenal 1-0.  The three points means that Villa have moved out of the relegation zone with just one game to go.

Tonight Manchester United take on West Ham who are not yet safe from relegation, whilst champions Liverpool are at home to Chelsea.

I have recently started a new job in a genetic engineering lab.  The pay is quite good as well...last week I made a monkey!
