Following an early morning inspection the meeting at Leicester goes ahead meaning that there are five meetings taking place this afternoon with jumps cards at Hexham and Leicester supported by all-weather flat cards from Lingfield, Chelmsford City and Kempton.  David has one runner today as Kepagge (pictured above) contests the 2m4½f novices' hurdle at Leicester at 3.00pm.  He made a very good impression on his debut for the stable when bolting up in a Chepstow bumper on soft ground last month and he has schooled well ahead of his hurdling debut.  This represents a step-up in trip, although it should not present a problem as he was still in with every chance when capsizing at the last in an Irish point over three miles and he has plenty of stamina in his pedigree.  He looks to be a really nice prospect and has outstanding claims under Tom Scu, although you won't get rich backing him.

I see that former Derby winner and sire Authorized has been sold to stand at stud in Turkey.  Best known for giving Frankie Dettori his first success in the Epsom classic, he enjoyed plenty of success in the breeding sheds and was particularly popular as a jumps stallion.  It is a shame that there will be fewer of his progeny about.

There was a good night for English football clubs in Europe last night with Chelsea beating Lille 2-1 meaning that they finish runner-up in their group allowing them through to the last 16 (and knockout rounds) of the tournament.  Reigning champions Liverpool cruised through with a 2-0 victory over Salzburg.  There is more European action tonight with both Spurs and Manchester City on their travels.

Following the UK open snooker last week, Ronnie O'Sullivan survived an early scare in this week's Scottish Open.  Performing a trick shot on the final black to level the score at 2-2, the white ball flew off the table to leave him trailing 3-1 before he rallied to a 4-3 victory.  'The Rocket' certainly doesn't mind courting controversy and last week took the governing body to task for stating that he was withdrawing from next month's Masters for personal reasons, stating this was "news to me" as he never entered the tournament.  World Snooker responded by saying that O'Sullivan had entered the tournament and asked then asked to withdraw.  Things are certainly never dull when O'Sullivan is in town!
