There is a busy day ahead with no less than seven meetings taking place...the only trouble is, there is no jumping (unless you count two hurdle races at the Galway Festival in Ireland).  The action on these shores comes from Goodwood, Newmarket, Chelmsford, Doncaster, Thirsk, Hamilton and Lingfield.  It has always seemed like a shame to me to have Goodwood and Newmarket on the same day - they are two of the best courses in the country and should not be competing against each other.  I see that Frankie Dettori has picked up four rides at Newmarket today and you would have thought that he would have had the choice, so I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the Italian among the winners.

What a performance from Battaash at Goodwood yesterday in lifting the Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes.  I did say that if he was anywhere near his best he would take the world of beating and he absolutely destroyed his rivals, bolting up by 4 lengths.  Jockey Jim Crowley referred to him as the 'Bat Mobile' and you could tell from his tone that he thought he was something special.  He definitely looks the fastest horse in Europe to me.  I also mentioned Seniority, who gave The Queen a welcome winner.  He was given a fantastic ride by Ryan Moore.  It's a shame that the Queen wasn't there, but at least the £93,000 should come in handy.

The big race of the day today is the commentators nightmare that is better known as the Stewards Cup at Goodwood.  It is a 28 runner handicap over six furlongs and will more closely resemble a cavalry charge.  Foxtrot Lady runs under a penalty and is 2lbs well-in.  The Balding three year old looks like an improver and is my idea of the most likely winner.  Ryan Moore is top jockey at the meeting so far with five winners.

It looks like both sets of bowlers are better than the batsmen in the first cricket test match.  England were bowled out relatively cheaply but fought back well against India.  We need to get Virat Kokli out - if we do then England would have a chance of snatching victory from the jaws of defeat.  India need 84 runs with 5 wickets remaining.

I had a good day yesterday and it was topped off by Derby beating Reading 2-1...I did say that Frank Lampard's arrival as manager has been like a breath of fresh air.
