Jaipaletemps Four Time Winner
After a busy week, things are slightly quieter on the runner’s front on the coming days with less race meetings scheduled than of late and it gives us time to draw breath. Last week began full of expectation but when you work with horses and animals in general, things are unpredictable and don’t always go as planned! The weather played a big part in some of the results with some of my horses not enjoying the testing conditions that prevailed but you have to keep looking forwards and remaining positive.
Bras D’or travelled to Ayr on Tuesday as I thought it looked a looked a good winning opportunity. He handled the heavy ground but he did get a little stuck in it in the closing stages. He ran well enough to finish third and the form might well work out to be fairly strong. Bras D’or will get a handicap mark on Tuesday from which we can make a plan. He is a future staying chaser but there are races to be won with him over hurdles first.
We had a few disappointments then before one of our horses of the season so far, Jaipaletemps won for the fourth time since returning from a holiday. He recorded two wins at Ffos Las starting from a mark of 94 in November, before winning at Lingfield just before Christmas and winning off a rating of 112 at Taunton on Saturday. He has struck up a great partnership with Rian Corcoran, providing him with his first career success and Rian has been on board for all of our seven year olds successes. I didn’t actually watch the race on Saturday live as I was busy at Ascot and when I watched the replay I did wonder how he ever won! Outpaced from the start round the much sharper track and ground conditions were not as soft he would ideally like, he looked in trouble for much of the race but Rian kept him interested throughout and when he asked him for his finishing effort he picked up the leaders fairly easily up the straight and won a shade cosily in the end! Life will be tougher for him again once is mark is reassessed this week but he is thriving at present and loving life and his racing so he may not have finished improving just yet. Rian gave him a lovely ride and is riding with maturity beyond his years at present.
All our horses ran well at Taunton with October Hill finishing third behind a couple of nice types in the novice’s hurdle. She improved for the slight step up in trip and will probably improve again for a bit further in distance again. She is a likeable mare with a good attitude and there are still shares available should you like to get involved in owning her! She has plenty of size and scope and will jump a fence one day. Please do get in touch for more details, ring the office on 01884 840715 or email: david@davidpipecom. Best Night ran her usual honest race to finish fourth and there were more encouraging signs from Mancero in the same race. Phantomofthepoints ran well to be fourth at Haydock and it was a nice confidence boosting run following his fall on chasing debut last time.
Neon Moon unfortunately fell at Ascot on Saturday with Harry Cobden on board. Neon is a very experienced chaser and I am not sure quite what happened as he seemed to jump the fence okay and then stumble and they both came down. Harry was unfortunately quite sore after this and was stood down for the rest of the day and he will not be riding for a few days this week while he recovers. Brendan Powell stepped in for the ride on Thanksforthehelp who could do with a little help from the handicapper and poor Harry missed out on the ride on Jonbon in the Clarence House chase but what a ride from James Bowen as deputy and it was a lovely big race victory for him.
Penn Avenue ran well on just her second start over hurdles to be fourth in a valuable contest at Windsor on Sunday. She was one of the outsiders in the field but was not beaten that far. She now should get a mark and is a lovely tough filly who will be winning races over hurdles going forwards.
This Week
We start this week with Givehimthehonour running at Lingfield on Monday afternoon with Jack Tudor riding. He has only had a handful of starts for us which have been quite spread out due to a few niggles at home but the handicapper has given him some help. He is an Irish point to point winner who will appreciate the step up in distance and fingers crossed.
On Tuesday, River Run Free runs at Leicester a track he won at last season. While he ran okay on his seasonal reappearance, he pulled up at Exeter last time. That was when the track was virtually unraceable and the meeting was abandoned a bit later in the afternoon. Hopefully we can put a line through that effort and he can return to form this time.
On Wednesday, Bashful Boy runs on the flat at Kempton and Eddy Greatrex rides as regular rider Rob Hornby is away skiing! Bashful Boy ran well to be third at the track two runs back, then finished runner up at Southwell and was third at Wolverhampton last time. He has been knocking on the door and deserves to get his head in front. He will appreciate going back to Kempton which is a stiffer test than Wolverhampton and while it again looks a competitive for the grade he should be thereabouts.
Our next jumps runners with then not be until the weekend. We have entries at Doncaster, Uttoxeter and Lingfield on Saturday and Fontwell on Sunday so keep checking the Daily News on the website for all the latest information on the stable runners. King Turgeon was confirmed on Monday for the Great Yorkshire Chase at Doncaster on Saturday and the plan is for him to run.
Pony Racing
Jack has his pony entered for the first time at Cocklebarrow point to point this coming Sunday. We haven’t fully committed to running him just yet but we will see how the week goes and decide from there. The aim is for them to take part in the racecourse series which starts a bit later in the spring so there is no rush at present but Jack is very much looking forward to making his debut on Little Chiefy and we will let you know how he gets on next week if he runs.
Point to Point Update
Well done to Martin McIntyre who rode his first point to point winner of the season at Larkhill on Sunday and to Ashley Dascombe who finished second in the novice riders race at the track. This weekend, we have our most local meeting at Chipley Park, just outside of Wellington. We plan to run Ben Lilly in the Open for Mia Holmes to ride and Lustfull Lady has an entry in the mare’s maiden. It is always a well-supported, good day out should you be looking for something to do on Sunday with the first race due off at 12 noon.
Sarah Clifford Passes Away
We were very sad to hear of the passing of former owner and yard sponsor Sarah Clifford earlier this month. Sarah had a real passion and enthusiasm for racing and breeding and had many winners on the flat and over jumps carrying the famous Bathwick Tyres red and gold silks. Together, Sarah and husband Wayne under their company banner sponsored our yard for nine years for which we are very grateful. They put a lot into racing through race sponsorship and also built up a very successful breeding operation alongside their granddaughter Laura. We have some very fond memories from both on and off the track together and our thoughts best wishes are with Wayne, Laura and the rest of the family at this sad time.
Cheltenham Festival Hospitality Marquee 2026
We are once again delighted to be hosting our Cheltenham Festival Hospitality Marquee alongside our yard sponsors W & S Recycling (Tues 10th—Fri 13th March 2026). This is for our owners and Racing Club member but we may be opening it up to a wider audience in due course. Tuesday is always popular and nearly sold out but we still do have availability on all the other days.
