The spoils once again went to champion jockey A P McCoy yesterday as he rode no fewer than four winners at Market Rasen to take his seasonal tally to an incredible 89 as we head into the enforced summer break.  Tom Scu kept his momentum going with a winner for David Bridgwater and he is next in the standings with 42 victories, by the far the best start to a season that he has enjoyed.  Of course 'Tom Tom' will be enjoying a slightly longer holiday than most of his compatriots following his error of judgement at Cartmel last month.

What a great week of racing they had at Glorious Goodwood and it was another good meeting for the John Gosden team who not only landed the feature Sussex Stakes with the outstanding Kingman, but the Group One Nassau Stakes on Saturday as well with Sultanina.  It sets things up nicely for the trainers' title with only a few months of the season remaining.  Gosden currently has a handy lead over nearest rival Richard Hannon, although it would be surprising if he were able to boast the sheer volumeof runners of the Hannon team.  It should certainly make for interesting viewing.

The Commonwealth Games drew to a close at the weekend and I for one will not be missing it too much.  As far as I am concerned it is very much the poor relation to the Olympics and with all of the great sporting events that have taken place during the summer including The World Cup, Wimbledon, The Open, British Grand Prix, Test cricket etc it has looked like something of an anti-climax.  Of course, it was good to see England head the medals table although I find this very misleading about where we figure on the world stage as we never return these sort of medal hauls at the Olympics.

It was a good weekend for Rory McIlroy as he won the Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone and he returned to the number one spot in world rankings.  Until the last few months McIlroy had been lacking in consistency but his form has certainly returned since his split with fomer world number one tennis player Caroline Wozniacki...I wonder if that is just a coincidence?!  Meanwhile, Tiger Woods pulled out of the final round with a back injury - that certainly doesn't augur well considering that he has recently had surgery.  The layers were right to make him a big price and we should have taken the hint - it is not very often the bookies give things away!
