Today there are just two meetings at Plumpton and Wolverhampton to look forward to. In fairness the Plumpton card looks to be fairly competitive with the Sussex National their feature contest. The 3m4f trip will take some getting on this very soft ground and the winner will certainly have earned the £12,500 first prize, having said that the prize money on offer through the entire card is very commendable. The track has always been a great favourite with the Londoners who can all jump on the train (there is a station right outside the course). I always used to enjoy stopping at the late Barry Cope's seafood stall for a good curry...happy days! Mind you, then I think of the M25...not such happy days!

There is a cracking day of action to look forward to today with five meetings taking place, four them over the jumps, the highlight of which is the Welsh National at Chepstow. The other meetings take place at Sandown, Newcastle and Wincanton, while there is an all-weather flat card at Lingfield. It looks like being a busy day for the stable with no fewer than eleven runners across three meetings. I will be particularly interested to see how Grands Crus' full brother Gevrey Chambertin gets on on his handicap debut at Wincanton. The race takes place at 2.05pm and I guess we will know shortly after that whether a mark of 130 is reasonable or not!

Today there are three meetings taking place, two over the sticks at Lingfield and Musselburgh as well as an all-weather flat meeting at Wolverhampton. It is a really good day if you like your all-weather racing as the Midlands track plays host to no fewer than FIFTEEN races! They are really spoiling us with action over all distances from five to fourteen furlongs - it is quite a long day with the action starting at midday and going right through until 7.30pm with only a break between the races at 3.00pm and 4.00pm. Good value if you like that sort of thing!

It's a big day for stable (and I use the word advisedly!) amateur Mikey Ennis as he makes his debut on the front cover of the Racing Post this morning. Mikey will ride leading fancy Sona Sasta in the Welsh Grand National at Chepstow on Saturday and with the horse at the foot of the weights, it is conceivable that he will have to ride at 9-7 (after his claim). The article looks in depth at Mikey's Christmas diet of fruit and nuts, a bit of salad and sushi...I hope that it will prove worth the effort. I remember Peter Scudamore having to ride at a very light weight at Haydock many years ago and the previous evening I kept getting the waiter at our table to bring the sweet trolley past...I don't think Scu even twigged on!

The stable continues in electric form with another hat-trick yesterday courtesy of Buddy Bolero at Exeter, while up at Musselburgh both Swing Bowler and Home Run obliged. Swing Bowler (pictured above), a daughter of that great racemare Lady Cricket was certainly the star of the show, winning the feature handicap hurdle in Scotland in good style and in the process extended her unbeaten run to five. This was only her third start over hurdles and she is certainly open to plenty of further improvement, while she also shaped as though she would stay further...she is clearly a very exciting prospect.

Well, Happy New Year everyone! Although sadly Cheltenham was abandoned yesterday owing to the inclement weather, at least there are five meetings taking place this afternoon including at one of our local tracks, Exeter which has passed an early morning inspection. The other meetings take place at Musselburgh, Catterick, Fakenham and on the all-weather at Wolverhampton and the stable has runners at Exeter and Musselburgh...yes I did say Musselburgh - it's a good job our travelling head lads both speak Scottish!

Cheltenham abandon tomorrow's
New Years' Day meeting
It was another good day for the yard yesterday with two winners at our local track, Taunton coming courtesy of Home Run and No Secrets. The ground was as heavy as I think I have ever seen it down there and this view was supported by the times of the races, with some of them nearly 1 1/2 minutes outside of the standard time! It was a memorable day for young Michael Heard who was riding his first winner under rules aboard Martin's own horse, Home Run despite doing his usual party piece of hanging over to the stands' side rail. It was an excellent training performance from David who was turning out Home Run to land his fourth success in just over three weeks...life will certainly get more difficult from here on in when the handicapper has his say. The owner was seen guzzling champagne before getting on the Buds!
