It was a case of so near but yet so far at Uttoxeter yesterday afternoon as Timeforben was narrowly denied in the staying handicap hurdle.  She looked the most likely winner for much of the way but could not quite get past Kiwayu after the last.  Nonetheless, she was trying to concede 10lbs to the winner so this was a very good effort and another personal best.  She is on a mark of 114 now and I just hope that the handicapper does not overreact.  She has plenty of ability and should continue to be competitive so long as she remains on a sensible mark.   winning pointer back in Ireland, she also has the option of going chasing at some point.

There are five meetings taking place this afternoon with flat cards from Hamilton, Leicester, Chepstow, Doncaster and Epsom.  Unsurprisingly, there are no runners from the Pond House team today.

Lambourn trainer Fergal O'Brien had an expensive wind operation yesterday.  Well, it wasn't Fergal, but his horse Vinnie Red who had the operation.  The trouble was that the trainer forgot to declare it to Weatherby's and was subsequently hit with a £290 fine.  I bet he found that hard to swallow!

The hot weather has really taken a toll on the ground and the staff at Lingfield had been watering the course for 17 hours per day in the run-up to their meeting yesterday.  Well done to George Hill and his team of groundsmen for their hard work in producing some decent, safe ground for the meeting.  I don't think I would want their water bill!

Many happy returns to one of our old jockeys, Hadden Frost.  Hadden enjoyed big race success for the yard on Buena Vista at the Cheltenham Festival and a Holloways Hurdle on Mamlook to name just two of them.  It seems like another lifetime ago, so I struggle to believe that he is still only 28.  Hadden should have been a Grand Prix driver...and I'm not joking!  Many happy returns Hadden - we hope you have a great day.

They have already teed-off for the start of the Open Golf Championship from Carnoustie.  I have been watching some of the practice rounds and the fairways look more like a motorway.  You are going to need plenty of luck with the balls bouncing everywhere.  I listened to Rory McIlroy's interview and it did not sound like he thought he had any chance.  Jason Day has earned a fortune from golf but was seen heading back to his accommodation with two 12" pizzas, ready to carb up for the coming tournament.

I see that Lewis Hamilton is about to sign his £40 million contract extension to continue his career with Mercedes...I reckon some of the jockeys could give him a run for their money!
