We have one runner at Goodwood this afternoon as War Singer (pictured above) takes in the one mile handicap at 4.50pm.  A very good horse on the level in France, he showed smart form when giving weight and a beating to subsequent Northumberland Plate winner Tominator at Cagnes Sur Mer over 1m4f.  Despite being effective at further, jockey Eddie Ahern (who rode him into third at Newbury over 1m2f) felt that he would be suited by a drop back in trip so we try the mile today.  This is an extremely competitive handicap and he has topweight to deal with as well as a wide draw so we will just have to see what happens.

There are five meetings on this afternoon, three on the flat at Goodwood (where they hold three group races), Ayr and Beverley as well as two jumps cards from Perth and Worcester, not forgetting of course the Galway Festival that continues over in Ireland.  Normal service was very much resumed in the Emerald Isle yesterday as Dermot Weld maintained his stranglehold on the meeting with a hat-trick on the opening day.

I see that it is former Grand National winning jockey Jimmy Frost's 54th birthday today.  I hope that someone in the yard tells his son Hadden as he never seems to be fully in-tune first thing in the mornings!  Anyway, many happy returns Jimmy.

Moving onto the Olympics, what about those inflatable jackets the three day eventers are wearing?  If they fall off, the jacket blows up a bit like an air bag, protecting the riders spine - I wonder why our jockeys don't wear them?  I reckon they would also be quite useful on a Friday night at pub closing time!

It was a good performance from the British Mens' Gymnastics team to win a bronze medal yesterday.  It was the first medal in that discipline in 100 years, so well done lads!  Sadly though, it is one of the few high points as far as Team GB are concerned as we are lagging behing our projected medal haul.

Novak Djokovic is priced up at 21/5 with BetVictor to win the mens' tennis and that looks to be a fair price to me.

I see that Phil "The Power" Taylor has just won his 13th World Match Play Championship.  Phil says that he is getting older and is no longer as fit as he was(!).  Personally I can't imagine Phil going for too many early morning runs.  I would like to have seen Jocky Wilson or Eric Bristow going through their training regimes - lift, swallow, put down, order another pint!
