I would just like to add my thoughts to the already vast number of well-wishers to Lough Derg on the news of his retirement.  What a horse he was...a real star to have in the yard for both David and Martin, and a privilege to have been associated with.  I used to walk past his box every morning at 6.30am and he would always stick his head over the door to let me know he was there.  He is one of those horses who would thrive on hard work and ran 169 miles on the racecourse during his career - that is like travelling from Pond House to London (what is more, that is without taking into account the miles he would have put in on the gallops at home)!  Tom Scu summed it up when he said, "he moves like Martin Pipe but is so tough it is unbelievable", although I'm not sure he ever moved that badly!  The picture of Tom bawling his eyes out after Douglas' win in the National Spirit will long stick in my mind, and continue to give me pleasure ribbing him with!  Happy retirement Lough Derg!

Poole_Master_gallopsWe just have the one runner this afternoon at Uttoxeter, Poole Master in the National Hunt maiden hurdle provided they have sufficient rain.  Poole Master (pictured right, on the gallops earlier in the week) showed ability in bumpers, winning at this course before finishing a close fourth on his hurdling debut at Newbury in a race that has worked out well (Pateese, who was favourite for the Greatwood Hurdle at Cheltenham's Open Meeting) was only two lengths in front of him.  He will be ridden by usual pilot Chris Honour.

I see that flat jockey Richard Hughes is winding up a few of his weighing room colleagues.  Hughsie tweeted "on the beach in Barbados, it doesn't get any better than this!" - you have to feel sorry for the lads left on these shores - the only sand they are likely to see will be on the racecourse at Kempton, Wolverhampton, Lingfield or Southwell and there certainly won't be much sun!

I watched the Arsenal reserves takes on the Manchester City reserves last night.  Organisers must do something about the Carling Cup as none of the big teams take it seriously.  If perhaps there was some incentive, such as a place in the Champion's League for the winners, then they might start to focus on it a little more.  At the moment it is a complete non-event for the top teams.

It looks to me as though the Chelsea and Blackburn Rovers managers are on borrowed time, both having lost again last night.  I don't suppose they will be too bothered - it seems to me that these managers just get a big pay off and then move onto the next club!
