As Ireland takes a break in its racing action today, there are two jumps meetings in Britain at Haydock and Taunton and a flat meeting at Wolverhampton. The stable has seven runners at Taunton, Jet Smart, Colony Queen, Free Chakarte, Itacare, Doyen La Lutte, Nobel Joshua and Ferdinand Star but the races look ultra competitive throughout.

Jet Smart runs in the novices hurdle over 2m3f at 1.15pm with Tom Scu in the saddle. He made a promising stable at debut at Ascot to finish fifth in a competitive contest but he then travelled to sedgefield where we expected him to win and he disappointed. We know he is much better than his latest effort but it is a bit difficult to know what to expect this afternoon, hopefully the long journey was a factor in his poor performance. If he puts his best foot forward today he will not be far away but we are just hoping he shows his true colours and we take a step back in the right direction.

Colony Queen (Tom Scu) and Free Chakarte (Philip Armson) run in the listed mares novices hurdle at 2.15pm.  Both our runners are big prices and look to have it to do but there is some black type on offer for finishing placed and we are hoping we might get some of this. Colony Queen has yet to translate her good flat form to hurdles but blinkers may help her cause as she does have the ability. Free Chakarte returns from a little break and gets all the weight allowances which will be a help but it will just be a watching brief for me.

Itacare runs in the handicap hurdle over three miles with Tom Scub on board. This is another competitive race and Itacare is one of the outsiders in the field. I think conditions will suit today and he ran better than his finishing position suggests when returning from a break at Kempton last time. He should have improved for that but my main worry is that he is still seven pounds higher than his last win. Hopefully he can put up a good show and give us something to shout about.

Doyen La Lutte runs in the three Mile two furlong handicap chase at 2.45pm with Fergus Gillard riding. She made an okay chasing debut at Ffos Las but was then very disappointing at Taunton last time. She goes up in trip today which will suit and blinkers replace cheek pieces. I would not be surprised to see her run better today but I wouldn’t have too much confidence. She definitely has the ability to win a race like this at 9/1 but she needs to leave her latest start well behind her, which hopefully she can!!

In the final race on the card we have two runners, Nobel Joshua and Ferdinand Star in the 2m3f handicap hurdle. Nobel Joshua returned from a long absence last time at the track and the run will have brought him on a lot. He is a course winner and is ridden today by Tommy Eyston. Tommy is now based with Neil Mulholland but while at college and university she rode out at Pond House a lot. She rides well and has ridden a few winners this season. Hopefully she will get on well with Josh and he takes another step forward in this run. Ferdinand Star will be ridden by Toby Wynne and the five year old makes his stable debut having been bought privately from Ireland. Our jockey is very experienced for this type of race having ridden 21 career winners and he has a winner on Boxing Day at Huntingdon. The horse has shown promise in all his starts in bumpers and hurdle races in Ireland and finished second last time out in a maiden hurdle at Tipperary in October. He has pleased us at home and it will be interesting to see how he gets on this afternoon.  On paper it could be tough for us to have a winner today but I forever live in hope! There are lots of our owners going and there will be a big crowd at our local track. It is their busiest meeting of the year so hopefully they have a great day.

Yesterday saw the passing of the greatest footballer of all time, Pele at the age of 82.  He had not been well for some time, battling cancer and I have read many wonderful tributes the the Brazilian legend.  He is the only player to have won three World Cups and he scored two goals in the 1958 World Cup final when Brazil beat hosts Sweden to win it as a 17 year old.    He also won it in 1962 and 1970 and there are so many wonderful video clips of him highlighting how good he was.  There are two Premiership football matches this evening with West Ham playing Brentfod and and Liverpool are at home to Leicester.

What has five toes but isn’t your foot? My foot!! Have a nice day!!
