There are five meetings taking place this afternoon with flat action from Newmarket, York, Ascot, Chester and Chepstow.  Today is the second day of Newmarket's July Cup meeting and there was big news on day one with John Gosden and Frankie Dettori reuniting for success in the 1m Listed Sir Henry Cecil Stakes with Mighty Ulysees.  It was a fine ride from Dettori to keep enough up his sleeve after his mount was plenty keen enough in the early stages.

The pair reunite today with star filly Inspiral in the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes at 3.35pm.  She returned from an absence of 252 days to rout a decent field at Royal Ascot and is head and shoulders above her rivals here.  It would be a massive surprise if she were to get beaten and so (at the moment) all looks rosy for the Gosden-Dettori axis ahead of the Irish Oaks next weekend.

There is another good card from Newmarket today and aside from the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes, there is a Group 2 contest as well as some more valuable handicaps.  The one that stood out to me was New London in the 1m2f handicap at 1.50pm.  He was well-beaten in the Chester Vase last time, although the tight, turning nature of that track may not have suited.  He is a lovely type and could be the proverbial 'Group horse in a handicap'.  He looks the one to be on to me, but I couldn't buy a winner at the moment, so be warned!

There are no runners from the Pond House team today, although we declared Lady Reset on the level at Salisbury tomorrow, so come back then to find out more.

I was disappointed to see that Rafa Nadal has withdrawn from Wimbledon, although after suffering an abdominal tear, the news does not come as a surprise.  It means that Nick Kyrgios gets a bye into the final and it will be interesting to see how that affects the viewing audience.  Kyrgios certainly divides opinion and I know plenty of people who will not be tuning in due to his presence.

He will take on the winner of today's semi-final between Novak Djokovic and Britain's Cameron Norrie, who is in his first Grand Slam semi-final.  He may have the crowd on his side, but he faces a colossal challenge in beating the six-times champion.

My wife left a note on the fridge that said, “This isn't working.” I’m not sure what she’s talking about. I opened the fridge door and it’s working fine!
