Weekend Jottings

There are three meetings taking place this afternoon with flat cards from Newmarket, Salisbury and Wincanton.  Of course, following the colts yesterday, the big race of the day is the 1,000 Guineas, the mile Classic for three year old fillies.  There is a hot favourite in the shape of Santa Barbara who comes here on the back of a maiden win at the Curragh last September.  The form of that contest is a long way short of what is ordinarily required to win a race of this nature, but the vibes from Ballydoyle would appear to be very strong so she must be burning up the gallops and could easily be a superstar.

Even so, she is plenty short enough in the market for what she has actually received and a bit of value could come in the shape of Statement who finished a narrow runner-up in the Fred Darling behind Alcohol Free last time.  The longer trip looks sure to suit her and she could go well at a decent each-way price.

There are three Premiership football matches taking place this afternoon with the Manchester United versus Liverpool match looking a prospective cracker.  Liverpool need to win this to get back into contention for a place in Europe whilst United, fresh off a 6-2 pasting of Roma need the win to maintain their slim chance of reeling in Manchester City.  All that means it will probably end in a draw!

I will be channel hopping between the World Championship Snooker final and the Portugese Grand Prix today.

A motorist was pulled over by a traffic officer.  "Excuse me, sir," said the police office.  "Do you realise that your mother-in-law fell out of the car two miles back?"
