Abbot Magic!

Midnight Magic gave the yard a timely winner at Newton Abbot yesterday afternoon.  After a couple of near misses earlier on the card with Percy Street and Story Of Friends, Midnight Magic added to his tally over fences with a hard-fought victory in the 3m2f conditional jockeys' novices' handicap chase.  Racing prominently throughout, he led in the straight and hung on well under a power-packed ride from Jack Tudor to prevail by 1¼ lengths and reward the patience of his owners Midd Shire Racing.  Earlier on the card Percy Street had finished runner-up in a decent looking seller - he should continue to be competitive wherever he runs, especially on top of the ground.  Meanwhile Story Of Friends was unlucky not to win the staying handicap hurdle having cruised into a clear lead turning for home.  He looked all over the winner until meeting the last wrong and losing all momentum.  He has certainly looked an improved performer since stepping-up in trip and this was another good effort.

There are four meetings taking place this afternoon with the action coming from Doncaster, Kempton, Wolverhampton and over the jumps at Uttoxeter.  The Doncaster card marks the first day of the St Leger meeting and is the first time the public are allowed back on the tracks with 3,600 attending this afternoon (although that could be all different come Monday).  There are no runners from Pond House this afternoon and with the jumps calendar somewhat fractured again for the next few days, are next runners will not be until Fontwell on Saturday at the earliest.

Australia emerged from the final T20 cricket match victorious over England with the hosts rarely looking likely to get on top.  England won the series 2-1, so at least it was only a hollow victory for the Aussies!  The one day series between the two sides gets underway on Friday at Old Trafford.

England's footballers looked lacklustre yesterday as they played out a bore draw with Denmark in their UEFA Nations Cup match.  How England can be favourites with bookmakers for the European Championships next year is beyond me.
