What a great performance from Miss M at Southwell yesterday afternoon.  Our six year old mare won the novices' hurdle under a penalty by 8 lengths under Tom Scudamore.  There were three in with a chance at the penultimate flight but she quickly put distance between herself and her rivals when Tom gave her a reminder to score with the minimum of fuss.  She has taken to hurdles really well and looks like a smart performer in the making.  Our other runners Malangen and Golden Jeffrey both ran okay to finish fifth and sixth in the 2m4f handicap hurdle, not beaten very far.

It's been a rough old night with 19mm of rain falling at the yard in the last 24 hours and it seems to have been a similar story further afield.  There are three meetings taking place this afternoon with flat cards from Catterick and Yarmouth supported by a jumps fixture from Bangor.  David has two runners today at Bangor; Lady Reset and Percy Street.  Lady Reset contests the mares' novices' hurdle at 12.30pm - our four year old filly was a dual scorer on the flat and has shown signs of ability over hurdles.  Her cause is probably not helped by the 20mm of rain they have had at the course which has turned the ground soft and she needs to improve on what she has shown so far to figure under Tom Scudamore.

Our other runner is Percy Street who comes here in good form having finished runner-up on his last couple of starts, when bumping into a couple of improving sorts.  Although his wins over timber have come on top of the ground, he has won on heavy on the flat in his younger days so he should handle this surface.  He doesn't win as often as perhaps he should but he has a nice racing weight and looks to hold every chance again this afternoon.  Tom Scu is in the saddle.

It doesn't look good for England's prospects of finishing their final test match against Pakistan with a win after the weather frustrated the hosts on day 4.  Pakistan finished on 100-2 at the close of play, trailing by 210 runs but with the weather forecast looking decidedly bleak, there is little chance of a result today.  I don't suppose it will bother England too much as a draw is all that is required to secure a series win.

There was a good win for Andy Murray in the second round of the Western & Southern Open tennis tournament in New York as he beat world number Alexand Zverev 6-3 3-6 7-5.  It is the first time since 2017 that former world number one Murray has beaten anyone ranked in the top ten.  He is on the comeback trail again after a second major hip operation in January 2019.  This was a good effort, although he still has to prove he can beat the best on a regular basis.  He will play Raonic in the next round.
