Ghost Serge Winner at Wolverhampton

Ghost Serge emerged out of the thick fog at Wolverhampton to win the 4.10pm race yesterday under Finley Marsh over 1m4f.  Ghost Serge is a bit of a character to say the least but a very talented one on his day!  We were particularly delighted for his owners Keith and Lynne Webb as we have had a few issues since he arrived but a win makes it all worthwhile.  They have been great supporters of Pond House for many years so it is fantastic he won in their colours.  He was a little reluctant going to the start but he did nothing wrong in the race.  Drawn widest of all Finley Marsh rousted him away from the stalls and took up a good position behind the leader.  As that one began to tire he took over the running and kept galloping all the way to the line on his first try at the trip under a fine ride from Finley Marsh.

Yesterday at Wolverhampton brought back memories of Cauhood winning the 1947 Grand National as he came out of the fog and won at 100/1.  There was later a lawsuit saying that he had missed out a dozen or so fences but this was overruled!  Truly Ghost Serge did win at 28/1!

There is racing today at Plumpton and David has one runner, Huccaby in the lucky last at 4.10pm.  Plumpton was a late addition to the fixture list and it is great the BHA managed to get the meeting to take place after the track lost last weeks fixture.  We have a hard frost here at Pond House but there are no problems at Plumpton and racing goes ahead.  Huccaby has not troubled the judge in any races so far but he did show more promise in his first try at this distance at Warwick last time.  Conditions were atrocious that day but he will prefer the soft but not quite so testing ground this afternoon.  Fergus Gillard rides claiming seven pounds as he races from out of the handicap.  He has no weight to carry and fingers crossed he can build on the glimmer of promise he showed last time and ran a nice race for his owners, Somerset Racing.  Today there is also another jumps card at Newcastle plus flat meetings at Kempton and Wolverhampton.
