Champers on Ice Winner at Newbury

We were thrilled with Champer's On Ice win at Newbury yesterday under a great front running ride from Tom Scu.  He lead the field a merry dance under top weight and as they came to challenge him up the home straight he fended them all off.  It was a super display of jumping and we were delighted to have got him somewhere back near his best.  He had some high class form in his younger days and was in fact third in the Albert Bartlett novice hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.  He was off the track for quite a while through injury and you never know quite how they will return but he has now made it two from two this season.  He dropped down in class last time at Ffos Las and won nicely and it is amazing what confidence this can give a horse and he loved every minute of yesterday and is a very happy horse this morning.  Owners Bryan Drew and Caroline Tisdall have been very patient with him and I am delighted they were rewarded with a great success.  He is out in the field and looks more brown than grey this morning!  We have the option of going back over fences again at some point but there are no definite plans at present.  Eamon An Cnoic did not look himself at Newbury yesterday unfortunately but he seems fine this morning and we will get him fully checked over in the coming days as his run was too bad to be true.

It was a great day of action yesterday at Newbury with top class performances from Champ and Paisley Park alongside Champers On Ice.  There is more terrific races to look forward to today withe the feature the Ladbrokes handicap chase at 3pm.  David has two runners this afternoon, Daklondike in the big race itself and Nordic Combined in the 1.50pm handicap hurdle.  Daklondike is a fairly big price but we are hopeful of a good run at an each way price.  He has lots of natural ability and on his day he is very very good.  He is a slightly quirky character but is in good form at home and he had a nice prep run over hurdles last time at the track where he finished second.  If on his best behaviour a big run would not be a surprise.  Nordic Combined is yet to win over hurdles but he has run some nice races behind top opposition to be placed.  He was third first time out in a competitive race at Ascot this season and filled the same spot at Exeter last time.  He is a two mile flat winner and tries 2m4f over hurdles for only the second time (he fell last time over this distance).  This should suit and fingered crossed he should not be far away.  Tom Scu rides both of today's runners.

It is great the hear that Newcastle have passed their early morning inspection and racing goes ahead.  The star on show in the North is Buveur d'Air who is looking to win the Fighting Fifth hurdle again.  He should be tough to beat.  There is also a good card at Fairyhouse so there is plenty of action to look forward to alongside Newbury with flat action at Lingfield at Wolverhampton plus another jumps card at Bangor.

The football kicks off at 12.30pm this weekend with Newcastle and Manchester City at 12.30pm.  Liverpool at at home to Brighton and Chelsea are at home to West Hame.  Bournemoth are away at Tottenham while Crystal Palace travel to Burnley.  Southampton play Watford at 5.30pm.
