There are five meetings taking place this afternoon with flat cards from Nottingham, Kempton and Newcastle as well as jumps cards from Huntingdon and Bangor.  There are no runners from Pond House today, although David Noonan has picked up three outside rides at Huntingdon.  It looks to me like he might struggle to ride a winner, I hope I am wrong.  They have clearly missed all of the rain as the official going is being described as good, unlike Nottingham who have had to survive an early morning inspection.  They have fared better than Salisbury however as they have already had to abandon their fixture scheduled for tomorrow as following lots of rain, the course is unfit for racing.  There was plenty of rain around Pond House again yesterday, although there were a few glimpses of sunshine as David's assistant Ali Galliers-Pratt captured with another great photograph...I taught her all she knows (obviously!).

I see the Chester Race Company will now run Musselburgh racecourse and I reckon that could be good news for the Scottish track.  Chester always seem to do a good job on their course so let's hope they can have the same positive impact there.  We can't afford to lose any more track - did you know that 16 courses have closed since 1960?  Buckfastleigh was the last track to close locally in 1960 but you can still see the abandoned grandstand from the A38 on the way to Plymouth.  It seems a shame to see it rotting away to nothing.

There is a great battle going on at the top of the jump jockeys' championship with Richard Johnson and Brian Hughes locked together on 62 winners.  Of course, it is still early days and good as Brian Hughes is, it will take a monster effort from him to wrestle the crown away from Johnson as he has so many different trainers who support him.

Some horses do have great names and one of the more recent ones that has amused me is 'Get Knotted' who won the 7f handicap at Ayr yesterday.  Can you imagine someone asking the name of your horse?  You could legitimately tell them to get knotted.  That would please me no end!

I had a good day yesterday with four winning bets from five selections at odds of 4/1, 3/1, 9/4 and 13/8.  There is food on the table in the Barnes household again!

Tottenham Hotspur were beaten 7-2 in their Champions League match against Bayern Munich.  They were completely outclassed and are nothing like as good as they think they are.  Meanwhile, Liverpool are 1/3 to win tonight and Chelsea are 23/20.

Andy Murray enjoyed the biggest success of his comeback so far when defeating US Open semi-finalist Matteo Berrettini 7-6, 7-6 in the first round of the China Open in Beijing.  The Italian is ranked 13th in the world so there is certainly merit in this victory.  Let's hope that he can build on this...he still has an awfully long way to go to get back to the top of the tree.

Thought for the day:  The man who can smile when things go wrong has already thought of someone else to blame it on!  Have a nice day...
