There are five meetings taking place this afternoon with flat cards from Royal Ascot, Thirsk, Beverley and Brighton whilst there is a single jumps card from Stratford.  David has one runner today as Percy Street (pictured above) contests the Ascot Stakes at 5.00pm.  It is a marathon 2m4f flat handicap and hosts the  biggest field of the day with 20 runners.  Percy ran in the race last year when beaten just twelve lengths from this mark, forfeiting most of that ground in the final furlong.  That was on good/firm going and he should prefer this more testing surface, although it is drying out very quickly and is now officially good (good/soft in places).  Finley Marsh is in the saddle and takes 3lbs off his back.  He is a huge price but could well outrun those odds and I wouldn't put you off a little each way fun bet.  No fewer than eleven jumps trainers have runners in the race.

Meanwhile, stable jockey Tom Scudamore has a couple of rides at Royal Stratford On Avon...that sounds better than just Stratford!  Whenever I have been to Royal Ascot the car park is like a giant picnic area.  Every car boot is open and food and drink is coming out.  Let's hope that it doesn't rain!  There are always a number of betting specials available too, including the colour of the Queen's hat.  Ladbrokes make blue favourite at 3/1, yellow is 7/2 and green is 4/1.  My mole at the palace tells me it will be blue...you heard it here first!!!

I see that it is Brod Munro-Wilson's birthday today.  Brod is an amazing character and is famously known for his unconventional riding style aboard The Drunken Duck.  The way Rod rode, I think the horse was named after him!  Anyway, many happy returns Brod...74 today!

Apparently new Chelsea manager Frank Lampard is in talks with Roman Abramovich aboard his £380 million yacht.  It sounds awful!  At least it makes the players seem like good value!

The cricket world cup continues and host nation England take on Afghanistan today at 10.30am.  This really should be a walk in the park for England although they will be long odds-on shots.  I wonder how many first class cricket pitches they have in Afghanistan?

There are only 13 days until the start of Wimbledon so the rain has been a little early this year.  You can be sure that it will be wet during the course of the championships...I don't know why they haven't put every court under cover.
