There are three meetings taking place this afternoon with jumps cards from Leicester and Catterick as well as an all-weather flat card from Lingfield.  There is one runner from Pond House today as Percy Street contests the 1m7½f handicap hurdle at Leicester at 3.05pm.  He was a smart performer on the flat (rated 95) and he has run creditably over hurdles since joining the team, finishing in the frame on both outings.  The drop back in trip should not inconvenience him at all and at odds of around 8/1 he holds each way claims under Tom Scudamore.

The stable continues in good form and I thought that Ramses de Teillee (pictured above) ran an absolute screamer to finish a close second in the Welsh Grand National.  He was only beaten 1¼ lengths by the well-backed favourite Elegant Escape and but for a mistake at the final ditch (4 out) he may have been even closer.  It was another personal best from our progressive young grey and he picked up £32,000 in prize money and certainly appeared to have no problems staying this longer trip.

Talking of the Welsh National, I bet a lot of people were unaware that Luke Harvey had won the Chepstow feature.  Mind you, that was aboard Cool Ground who went on to win a Gold Cup!

Earlier on the card, Jasmin des Bordes finished a promising third in the decent looking maiden hurdle on his debut over timber.  A mistake at the last probably cost him second place but this was a promising effort and he looks like a winner waiting to happen.  Jacbequick also performed creditably over at Kempton, finishing fourth in the competitive handicap hurdle.  His turn does not look to be far away.  It is certainly good to see all of the horses in good form.

Altior continues to look other-worldly as he extended his unbeaten run over fences to sixteen in the Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton.  He is now only one win short of Big Buck's streak over jumps and I don't see his winning ways coming to an end any time soon.

I see that if you book online you can get free entry to Wolverhampton's nine meetings in January.  As you are probably aware by now, I am not a fan of all-weather racing so am not sure if that is good or bad thing!

We were saddened to learn of the passing of Mrs Jenny Kennard on Boxing Day.  Jenny, a former owner at Pond House with the likes of Sam Rockett and Toomuch Toosoon was wife to former trainer, the late Les Kennard who was a great inspiration to Martin during the early part of his career.  Jenny was a tremendous character and will be very much missed.  Our thoughts and condolences are with her family and friends.

Let's talk about football as the mighty Hammers won 2-1 against Southampton yesterday, taking their total to five wins from six matches in February.  I just hope they can hold on to Felipe Anderson who is looking a bargain at a mere £41 million!

Former British number one tennis player Andy Murray has entered the Brisbane International in Australia as well as the Australian Open.  He is now ranked 256 in the world.  He says that he still feels pain in his hip - let's hope that it can stand up to the pressure of gruelling five set matches.  Only time will tell...
