It has been a misty start to the day here at Pond House.  There are five meetings taking place this afternoon with flat cards from Haydock, Redcar and Newcastle while there are jumps fixtures from Wincanton and Fakenham.  There are no runners from Pond House today, although stable jockey Tom Scudamore has picked up a couple of outside rides at Wincanton.  Meanwhile, I thought that Eur Gone West ran an absolute stormer to finish a good fourth in a competitive novices' hurdle at Uttoxeter yesterday.  This was his first run for almost a year and he shaped with a good deal of promise.  He should be suited by further in time and looks like a winner waiting to happen.

If you are thinking of having a bet at Wincanton, do watch your names in the first...there are horses called Pack It In and Pac It In in the same race.  If you have dodgy handwriting like me, I suppose you could claim you were backing either!  Mind you, they are both 50/1 chances so the chances of you collecting could be remote.  The one I feel sorry for is the commentator...I wonder how he is going to deal with that?

Northern based jockey Brian Hughes is going to be busy this weekend as he flies out to America today to ride in the Grand National hurdle at Far Hills in America where he rides Hammersly Lake who finished fifth in the race last year.

It must be getting closer to Christmas as the Injured Jockeys' Fund Christmas cards as calendars go on sale today.  Sir Anthony McCoy and Lester Piggott have both chosen a horse or race that is special to them and described why.  It's the 54th year of production and is in aid of a really good cause.  You can buy their merchandise from www.ijf.org.uk

You may find this difficult to believe, but an Austrian football club has offered to give fans brothel vouchers.  SV Gossendorf are sponsored by a bordello called Bar Inkognito, so I suppose at least the fans will score if the footballers don't!

What a run out in the cricket between Pakistan and Australia!  Pakistan batsman Azhar Ali was run out will standing out of his crease and chatting.  He thought he had hit a four but the ball had not crossed the boundary rope and wicket keeper Tim Pain collected Mitchell Starc's throw and whipped off the bails to the astonishment of the batsman!
