There are six meetings taking place this afternoon with flat cards from Chester, Lingfield, Ascot, Nottingham and Ripon, while the jumping action comes from Market Rasen.  The best of the stable's runners yesterday was Great Tempo who produced a solid effort when finishing third on his chasing debut at Worcester.  I am not sure that he truly saw the trip out but it was a promising first effort over the larger obstacles nonetheless, conceding lumps of weight away to the first two.  On this evidence he should be picking up races over fences before too long.  There are no runners from Pond House today.  The big race of the day is the Chester Cup - it is a red hot handicap over 2m2½f.  Believe it or not, it is still very important to get a low draw in a race like this even over the marathon trip.

Just think if you were a jockey's agent, you would be dubious about putting your rider aboard Grey Messenger who managed to unseat his rider for the fourth consecutive time at Worcester yesterday afternoon.  I don't know about a riders' fee, you would be wanting danger money to get aboard!

Surely it is about time that there was a better rule to protect punters when horses fail to go with the remainder of the field at the start of a race?  Utility refused to go at Huntingdon yesterday having whipped around at the start.  He should have been called a non-runner and all people backing him should have their money refunded.  As far as I am concerned, if you cannot win, how can you lose?

I see that it is former snooker world champion and racing fan John Parrott's 54th birthday today.  John came down the yard a few years ago and put on a great snooker exhibition against some of our owners.  He is also quite handy at table tennis.  I did beat him (on the table tennis table anyway!).  Many happy returns John.

My beloved West Ham drew with Manchester United last night, although in fairness neither team looked very good.  The only excitement came when Noble and Pogba had a coming together, although if it came down to it you would have to fancy Pogba who is about a foot taller than Noble.

It is amazing what a bit of confidence can do.  British tennis player Kyle Edmund seems to have taken his play to a new level, thrashing world number 10 David Goffin 6-3, 6-3 in his last 16 match of the Madrid Open.  His next match will be against Canadian Shapovalov in the quarter finals.  It is a shame that Andy Murray is still injured as we would have some Davis Cup team right not!  Murray's mum says that Andy will be fit to play at Wimbledon...good old mum!
