There are two meetings taking place this afternoon, both over the jumps with cards from Carlisle and Leicester.  Thankfully Carlisle passed an early morning inspection at the track yesterday but the ground is going to be extremely testing.  They have been experiencing freezing temperatures at the track, but when it does thaw the going has been described as soft, heavy in places.  It has been cold around Pond House as well, but with the woodchip gallop and the Wexford sand gallop we have had no issues whatsoever - it makes you wonder what trainers did years ago before the had access to these sort of facilities?

There is a fantastic card taking place over in Ireland today at Fairyhouse with three Grade One's and a Grade Three contest on menu.  Two of the races are worth in excess of £100,000 and while there are not huge fields, there is plenty of quality on show.

I met up and coming jockey Bryony Frost at Exeter last weekend and what a fine young lady she is.  She seems really nice and is a tremendous credit to her father Jimmy.  She said that her father sets her straight and it seems as though she is listening and her career is blossoming as a consequence.  Apparently she loves surfing and rock climbing, yes I did say rock climbing so she is clearly like the remainder of the weighing room...not all there!

The flat weighing room is soon to lose one of it's senior members as Steve Drowne has decided that it is time to hang up his saddle at the end of the year.  He says that it is very difficult to make a living when you are a freelance jockey and that you have to make all your money in a two or three month window in the summer.  It is a shame to think that someone as talented as Drowne struggles to make a good living.  He rode his first winner 27 years ago...time certainly does fly.

Could somebody please lend me a calculator so that I can work out the score by which Manchester City are going to beat my beloved West Ham.  At least our goalkeeper, Joe Hart will be getting plenty of practice!  Meanwhile Bournemouth are 39/19 to beat Southampton and that will give me a bit of interest.

There are so many players getting injured at the moment - it does make me wonder if it is the artificial surfaces that are causing the problems?  I can't remember back in the 'good old days' so many muscle problems.

I phoned the local ramblers association the other day.  The bloke who answered the phone just went on and on and on!  Keep smiling...
