Steve Ayres

Steve was born in Hereford 4th May 1983. He has been working at Pond House since August 2007.

Steve has always worked in racing. He started when he was 14 years old, working Saturdays at Venetia Williams stables. He then went to The British Racing School where he was head lad. From there he worked for Luca Cumani and Michael Bell in Newmarket. He then went on to work for Richard Lee and was at Henry Daly’s for 4 years before coming to Pond House.

He got into horses because his granddad was a big racing fan and it was always on the television. As soon as he saw it he was hooked and knew he wanted to be a jockey and work in racing forever.

Steve’s best time in racing was when he had his first ride under rules at Bangor-on-Dee. He really enjoyed it but was so tired after the race that he nearly fell over when unsaddling!
The best horse Steve has looked so far in his career is Billyvoddan. The best horse he has looked after at Pond House is Quaddick Lake.

Steve’s funniest time in racing was when Billyvoddan dragged him through the middle of the parade ring at Cheltenham in front of thousands of people! He likes all the horses here but his favourite would have to be Quaddick Lake.

Steve is currently single and has a daughter called Chloe who was born in 2004. She is already riding and loves it.

Outside of racing Steve enjoys fishing, football, playing the guitar and the occasional beer.

Steve would really like to ride under rules again in the future, become an assistant and maybe even a trainer someday.
