Gerry has been involved with horses for many years, having his first ride on a pony at the young age of four.

At the age of nine pony racing beckoned and with 20 winners in the bag, this provided an ideal grounding for his future career.

When Gerry was 15 years old he worked for Aidan O'Brien for six months.  Before joining the Pond House team in 1996 he spent two seasons working for Bob Buckler.

A ride at Wincanton on 'Tour Leader', trained by Bob Buckler, at the age of 17 started his English career.  A trip to Fontwell to ride 'Prince Teeton' was fruitful, providing his first win under rules.  Since then many more winners have been booted in, now with a total of over 50.  Gerry struck up a formidable partnership with an inmate from Pond House called 'Fleet Cadet', which accounted for seven of his many wins.  Gerry was the only jockey to win on the horse over hurdles, despite the best efforts of Tony McCoy, Chris Maude and Co!

Gerry had a short international career, with four rides, whilst spending six weeks on a working holiday in New Zealand.

It was a natural progression for Gerry to become a jockey with his three brothers all involved in the sport of racing; Willie who is a very successful jockey on the flat (Dubai Champion Jockey), Robbie (former stable jockey to Len Lungo) and John both Assistant Trainers.  Gerry's parents are retired butchers and live in County Kerry.
