Martin Ayliffe

Martin was born in Minehead in November 1956. When he left school he went to work for Tim Handel while also helping out at his father, Nick's yard. After a year working for Tim Handel Martin returned home to assist with his father's training operation at Winsford, nr Exmoor.

Martin rode seven point-to-point winners and 30 under rules, mainly for his father. His first winner under rules was aboard Spindrift at Exeter. The first time Martin went to Cheltenham he rode a winner for Tim Handel called Polly Wall; they arrived at the course too late to walk the course. Martin Pipe also rode Polly Wall in a point to point. Martin's best memory of his riding career was coming out of retirement to land a gamble beating Jonothan Lower on a Pipe runner!

Martin has been working at Pond House in his role as barn leader for five years. The best horse that Martin thinks he has ridden while at Pond House is Valiramix, by far.

In Martin's spare time he enjoys playing golf and spending time with his daughter, Nikki and three grandchildren. Working in racing doesn't give him as much time as he would like to have to spend with his family.
