Today we have five meetings taking place with flat cards from Newmarket, York and Chelmsford City and a couple of good jumping fixtures from Chepstow and Hexham.  David saddles the favourite for the Cesarewitch handicap at Newmarket, Low Key (pictured above).  He was the taking winner of the trial over course and distance last time and is only 4lbs higher owing to the penalty he picked up for that success and apprentice Tom Marquand is once again in the saddle and takes a handy 3lbs off his back.  He worked well earlier in the week and conditions should suit - hopefully readers of this column will already be on at bigger prices.  Meanwhile, we also have three runners at Chepstow with Stars Over The Sea, The Liquidator and Standing Ovation.  Standing Ovation has been in good form over hurdles and fences this season, including when winning the Listed Mildmay Chase earlier in the season - he is 8lbs higher now but should once again put up a bold effort.  Tom Scudamore is aboard all three of our runners at Chepstow.

Our two runners at Newton Abbot both ran creditably yesterday.  Gevrey Chambertin was not beaten at all far in the 3m2 1/2f handicap hurdle - he was held up for a change and he seemed to see his race out well enough and appeared to enjoy himself which was the main objective.  He did run in snatches a little and was outpaced when they quickened three out but he kept going well enough and this was more encouraging.  He will win again but it will be when he is in the mood!  I thought that Lady Of Longstone ran well to finish runner-up under Michael Heard in the 2m5 1/2f handicap hurdle - she may not be one of the stable stars but she never stopped trying even when headed and there looks to be a similar contest in her from this sort of mark.

There was a ready win for the English last night as they beat Estonia 2-0 in their Euro Qualifier.  When I think of Estonia it is the Eurovision Song Contest that springs to mind rather than quality football.  I think they would be better off in that competition!

I said yesterday that money talks and so it has been proven once again as Sam Allardyce has been named as the new manager of Sunderland.  There will be no more football in Sunderland...all you will get is a long ball up the middle with ten men defending, just like it used to be at West Ham and all "Big Sam's" previous clubs before that!  If he keeps Sunderland in the Premier League he will deserve all of the bonuses his contract is sure to allow for - I am not so sure it will happen though.

My rugby mate is getting very excited about the match between Australia and Wales on ITV at 4.45pm.  Having said that, he is one of those people who gets hyped about almost anything, even Torquay playing football!  It is a big night for the Welsh as they also have a Euro football qualifier on Sky Sports at 7.45pm - they take on Bosnia at 7.45pm and if Gareth Bale is on form, 7/2 could be a big price.

While we are on the subject of football (and Torquay!), the Gulls play Southport and the 7/5 available about Southport looks far too big - it looks like a case of fill your boots...you heard it here first!
