| Chester was born on 27th January 1947 in East London
, which is why he supports West Ham United. In 1963 he became the
youngest ever English table tennis champion at the tender age of 15.
He won five British championships and represented his country in
over 250 international performances. This included winning titles
all over the world. After Chester retired from playing competitively
he performed a table tennis cabaret act at venues including Caesars
Palace in Los Angeles, Wembley NEC, most of the major cruise liners
and also toured the Pontins holiday camps. He has also had five
books published about this sport. It was while touring the holiday
camps that Chester met his great friend, world snooker champion Ray
Reardon. They now both play golf at the same course, Churston. Chester met Martin through a friend of a friend and it was all to do with a table tennis match that they set up against Martin's close friend, Richard Lewis. That was the start of Chester's association with Martin Pipe and Pond House. He travels up daily from his home in Brixham during the winter months to assist Martin with gallop watching and he supplies all of the information for 'Pipeline'. When Chester first started at Pond House he used to drive thousands of miles each year going all over the country saddling runners. He has also travelled with runners to Ireland, France and America. We taught Ches to ride on Carol's old hunter; Mooney and he quickly progressed to riding work alongside David Pipe on the gallop. We tried to get him jumping over hurdles but he fell off and broke his wrist going over a pole on the floor! I don't think I've seen him on a horse since! Chester is married to Jane who teaches English at Brixham College. They have a son named Lester, after Lester Piggott who is a professional golfer. Martin and Carol are two of Lesters god parents. Ches enjoys playing golf, even if he can't beat Lester and also in his spare time likes fishing. |
