There are three meetings taking place this afternoon with flat action from Carlisle and Brighton as well as a jumps card from Worcester.  It is not exactly great fare, although Worcester have managed to put up £64,000 in prize money which compares favourably to the flat cards so well done to them.  Although there are no runners from Pond House, stable jockeys Tom Scudamore, David Noonan and Michael Heard have all picked up outside rides at the track.

I see the Newmarket Open Day went off well and ITV racing pundit Francesca Cumani won the showjumping competition for racing personalities.  Ryan Moore was a late entry to the event but could only finish fourth after picking up four faults.  Meanwhile, the highlight for me, the canter on the gallops was hindered by fog although plenty of people still turned out I am informed.

A crowd of 12,000 descended upon Lingfield at the weekend for racing followed by a Craig David concert.  The courses obviously still need to work on these post-race functions as there were numerous complaints about poor organisation and inadequate facilities, especially the lack of toilets.  Some visitors had to wait an hour to use the conveniences...not very convenient at all!  Apparently Craig David was brilliant but seriously, how hard can it be to put in more toilets.

I see that it is former owner and England goalkeeper Peter Shilton's 68th birthday today.  He owned Wingspan, Between The Sticks and the best named of all, Catch The Cross.  MCP once asked him how many goals he had scored - and I am not kidding!

Sandy May is coming out of retirement to ride in a legends race at Chepstow to raise money for the Bob Champion Cancer Trust.  Sandy had prostate cancer four years ago and then cancer in his neck the following year so to be back in the saddle will be a remarkable achievement.  Sandy road my first ever winner as an owner aboard Manrico at Hereford.  Also participating is another former Pond House legend Paul Leach, who you will have seen has been riding out at the yard ahead of the event.  Paul won the Triumph Hurdle for Martin aboard Baron Blakeney in 1981 - I still have not got over the fact that I backed him at 50/1 and he returned at 66's...no best odds guaranteed in those days!

Both Manchester clubs won with big scores at the weekend but for me that City forward line looks to be exceptional.

I don't know why my elderly neighbour bothers subscribing to newspapers if he is just going to let them pile up outside his house!  Have a nice day...
