There is a busy day of action ahead with no less than seven meetings taking place.  There is flat action from Newbury, Newmarket, Ripon, Haydock and Lingfield, and yes, two jumps cards from Market Rasen and Cartmel.  Lingfield once again are offering just £30,000 across their seven race card - I'm sorry, but for a Saturday that is just downright poor.  Stable jockey Tom Scudamore has picked up a couple of outside rides at Market Rasen and they look as though they have it to do, while Conor O'Farrell has one ride at Cartmel, although I don't think I will be testing the 'one ride theory' today.

There is some very good jumps action from Market Rasen today with a handicap chase that is worth almost £28,500.  As you would expect, it is extremely competitive (they go 7/1 the field) and I would risk a little bit on Shelford who is lurking towards the bottom of the weights and is around the 12/1 mark.

It is about time that drones were banned from all racecourses.  A horse in the parade ring at Killarney was hit by one of these things - just imagine what could have happened if it had been in one of the races.  If people want to play with these toys they should be in field miles from anywhere (and that includes airports).

There was tragic news from Haydock yesterday evening when one of the stalls handlers, Stephen Yarborough was run over and killed when the starting stalls were moved.  It is a shock when anyone within the industry is hurt, be it jockeys or stable staff, but this is a terribly sad incident and just goes to illustrate what a dangerous sport this is and the risks that these people take everyday to bring us our wonderful sport.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family at this awful time.

Great champions always seem to bounce back and just when I was getting concerned about the form of former world number one golfer, he hit a magnificent round of 68 yesterday in terrible conditions at the Open.  The weather at Birkdale is so changeable, the last two days will certainly be interesting.  The best placed of the home players is Ian Poulter who should be quite at home in the wet and windy weather.  Meanwhile, Henrik Stenson was burgled and had to borrow someone else's clothing which had "Boss" branding all over it - the trouble was, with a round of 73 he wasn't bossing it.

The World Matchplay darts starts today in Blackpool and will be the last time that Phil 'The Power' Taylor participates in it as he retires at the end of the season.  He has won the title an incrediblle 15 times.  A darts player that everyone has heard of - I don't think we will see anyone dominate like him for a while.
